Using Imagery to Unearth Your Truth

A Reflection by Christine Jurisich

Each Sunday throughout this month, I have been offering a practice you can use to help you unearth the still voice of God calling you to a deeper wholeness. This week, I invite you to use imagery to unearth your truth.

A threshold is the space in between the old and the new, the past and the future. The image of a door is one symbol of a threshold, as it speaks to the movement and intention needed to open the door and move through it. You have to unlock it and turn the knob. Some doors are hard to open and require a push. Sometimes you cannot remember which key is needed, and you have to try them all before finding the right one.

I invite you to reflect on the image of a door that represents a threshold. What are you leaving—or want to leave—behind? What are you walking into—or want to walk into—in this new Retreat, Reflect, Renew retreat season? If this is a time of transition, perhaps imagine yourself right in the middle of the doorway, being okay with this unnamed and unknown space. What does your door look like? Is it more of a gate? Draw what comes up in your imagination and then reflect and journal about it.

Author Joyce Rupp has a beautiful book that uses door imagery as a pathway into our spiritual growth journey. Here is one of her prayers.

Great Door of Love,

Assure me of your protective presence

As I wander about the landscape of my life.

When I become lost, clear a path for hope.

May every seeking footstep of mine

Take me through the doorway of your love.

Be my passageway today. O, be my passageway.

I open the door of my heart to you.

I open the door. [1]
