Courage to Watch the News

A Reflection by Christine Jurisich

As a former TV journalist, it is sad for me to write this reflection. Still, I believe it is an important subject in light of so much upheaval in the U.S. and around the world. How do we find courage to watch the news?

Watching the news can be emotionally draining because of so many devastating situations. It is frustrating and anxiety-inducing. It takes courage because you risk feeling bad, anxious, hopeless, or powerless. It can feel like an act of bravery to ask God, “How am I called to respond?” What if you hear an answer that is way outside of your comfort zone?

It also takes courage to watch a TV channel with which you disagree. What if you hear something that goes against the narrative you feel most comfortable with? Sometimes it takes brave inner work to ask yourself, “What can I learn about myself when listening to a new point of view?”

Hopefully, you are good to yourself and know when it is important for your mental health to take a break from the news. There are times when the brain and heart need to rest. I remember hearing a quote during the height of the pandemic: “So many names, there is barely room on the walls of the heart.”

During this season of Lent, let us work to find the courage in our faith to lift our hands to God and say, “I trust You are in this space. I trust that we are standing on holy ground.”

We want to hear from you.
